long heat cycle

Question
my pointer came in heat on feb. 22nd. first day of blood. she had a litter of pups fine 5 months ago so i expected her heat at this time. however it is now march 28th and she still has spotting and swollen vulva. her color goes from lighter tan which i know is nearing end of cycle or would be breeding time. her colro goes form lighter color to a bit darker pink/red when i wipe her. also she spots on floor. does this mean she did not ovulate in order to complete heat cycle? she has no foul odor and seems normal other than that. her normal time for accepting male is from day 19-day 21 of heat cycle. thanks, kathy

Answer
Hi Kathy

If your breeding her back to back make sure she is perfect health.  A pregnancy and whelp can knock a female's system out of whack.

By your date of February 22nd she would be prime for breeding the 11 - 13th of March.

You count from the first day of spotting NOT when the bleeding stops as some female may bleed longer or spot the entire season, especially if they have had a litter.

Good luck
