crate size for shih tzu

Hi Crystal,

we are adopting a shih tzu puppy in a week and a half. I was wondering what size of crate is best? Do you have any suggestions on toys, treats, food, or any other supplies that I will need?  I appreciate any help or advice you can give. Thanks

Hi Christine!  Congrats on your new bundle of joy.  I use medium crates for my puppies.  As for toys, they love the stuff dog toys that squeak.  Do not buy rawhide toys or treats.  They love them but can not digest the rawhide and it can become stuck in their digestive system.  You can purchase puppy treats from any pet store made for puppies.  It is just a matter of what you want them to have.  I wouldn't get anything to small as you don't want it to choke.  For food Pro Plan and Science Diet are good foods.  Make sure you puppy proof your home well before bringing your baby home.  A trip to the vet within a few days of receiveing it is a great idea.  I would not take you puppy out of your home other than a trip to the vet until all shots are finished.  You wouldn't want it to catch anything.  There are to many diseases out there that can harm or kill your new puppy.  Don't forget to buy shampoo.  I like Johnsons baby shampoo.  Not only will it not burn their eyes but it also kills fleas.  Also do not forget to purchase a dog comb and brush.  Get a squirt bottle and mist your pups coat as you brush.  Never brush dry or it will break the hair.  Be sure to brush him/her once a day.  If I can help any further don't hesitate to ask.
