Crate Training a dog

Question
I recently adopted a 4 year old Yorkie. I am using crate training to house break her, however she relieves herself everyday in the crate. She is in the crate about 8 hours while I am at work. I read that dogs will not usually got to the bathroom where they sleep, however she doesn't seem to mind. I take her out before she goes in the crate and yet she is still not getting it. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Answer
Hi KLatie;
I really can't help you wiuth crate training as I do not and have never used it.
Crate training has just become popular in the last 10 years or so, and I just don't believe they have a place in raising dogs.
We have to use them in the pet rescue grou, and in the Humans society facility, and we hate having to do that. We make sure they are taken out every couple of hours and walked outside.
I don't know of any of the members that use a crate with their animals at home.
I foster dogs for several of the rescue groups, and I don't use crates in my home for them.
8 hours seems like a very long time for a dog to be in one of those things.
She really has no choice but to go in it.
