Chihuahua Puppy?

19 14:03:09

Question
We are thinking of adding a Chihuahua puppy to our family.  We currently have three daughters (ages 12 and 14) and two Rat Terriers.  The Rat Terriers are female and they are 7 and 8 years old.  One of the Rat Terriers (the older one) is definitely the alpha dog.  They are both very spoiled and we love them very much.  My oldest daughter is asking for a Chihuahua puppy.  I don't mind having another dog in the house, but I am concerned on how my Rat Terriers will adapt to a new puppy.  I was told that I should get a male and it should be a puppy.  Do you have any opinions on whether or not this is a good idea?  I would like to make an informed decision.  We take this very seriously and we want to be responsible.

Thank you,
Jeannine

Answer
Hi Jeanine.
If your dogs are sociable with other dogs, there should be no problem. I have taken in many puppies through my rescue and my unsociable-with-other-adult-dogs akita was fine. After he got used to them, he treated them like his son/daughter. Also if your rat terriers are still energetic to handle a pup, then it would be fine. If not quite energetic enough, then dont let the pup hassle them too much. And if your terriers give the pup trouble for something and its not total aggresion(a nip to show the pup his place), then leave it alone. They will teach your pup how to behave. Also, do not leave the pup alone with the adults. Crate him, or put him in another room when you cant supervise.
As for a male/female, it shouldn't matter. As long as your dogs are spayed and nuetered, it won't make a difference.

I think this can be a great situation as long as you consider everything. Oh, and one last thing. Do not ignore your terriers when you get the pup. This can cause jealosy.

Good luck, I hope I've helped, and come back if you need anything else.
