Question
Labman,

In 32 days (Yes, the countdown is neccersary) we will be getting a Pug puppy.

I've been told that Pugs can not wear a collar and must wear a harness is this true? Also, I've heard that pugs have a tendency to overeat. We used turkey bacon with our Boxer, Holly. Would it okay to use carrots with our new pug?

And, if you could give me more advice on bringing a puppy into a house with another dog, it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
You can wear a collar on a Pug.  It may take careful fitting not to restrict its neck or slip over its head.

Over eating is common in Pugs and many other breeds.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. I question giving dogs carrots fearing they will choke on them.  Many people do.  I would cut them up in small pieces.

Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.
