my cairn terrier has recently started to dig earth with his back legs all the time but does it more so when he has just toileted

Answer
This is because dogs have scent glands between there back paws-and they want other dogs to know it is there territory and they esp do this after going to the bathroom

If it bothers you when he is doing that say 'no digging' and call him over to you
