Question
I have an eight year old male rott. He has diabetes and has gone almost completely blind. We give him 22ml 2x daily of humilin N. We have noticed droplets of blood and have come to the conclusion that it is coming from his penis.
Does anyone know if this is a symptom of the diabetes and what may be happening to his internal organs?

Thank you! He is our baby.

Answer
Hi Des,

Dogs with diabetes are prone to develop urinary tract infections, and that could most certainly cause blood in the dog's urine, or to drip from his penis.
The sugar content of urine in a diabetic dog provides a breeding ground for bacteria once they enter the bladder.

Your dog needs medical treatment for this problem. Please take him to your veterinarian ASAP to avoid complications.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
