Question
I live in California and it has been very cold.. we had 2 adult rottweilers. we had them inside with us till there bedtime. so we took them outside and put both of them in a kennel and coved it with some blankets to kept them warm. when it came to get them out in the morning we found both of our loving dogs dead. we don't know what happened. they were both very wet when we found them. could it have been so hot that they died or i was also thinking carbon monoxide.. this is a very big loss for me and my family. It did not look like they were trying to get out. they looked like they were just sleeping. thank u.

Answer
Hi Alex,

I'm very sorry to hear of your recent loss.

I don't know what you mean when you say: "they were both very wet when we found them. Could it have been so hot that they died."
Dogs don't sweat, so if they were overheated they would not get sweaty. Besides, you said it was very cold that night, so it's doubtful they would have become over heated to the point where it would have caused death.

You didn't say how cold it was that night. Short haired dogs should not be kept outside if the temperatures fall under 20 degrees, but if the dogs were not acclimated to cold temperatures, that could have killed them.
Knowing that unseasonably cold temperatures were expected that night should have been your clue that it was too cold to leave the dogs outside that night, if they did not have adequate shelter.

Were the dogs were in an unvented area for an extended period of time, near something such as a running car or heating exhaust where carbon monoxide is produced?
If they were, then it's fair to consider carbon monoxide.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out what killed the dogs is to have your vet preform a necropsy (an animal autopsy).

Again, my sincere sympathies,

Patti
