Female dog and her puppy.

Question
I have three questions. I got a beagle mix from an ad online where I live. I'm not real sure about her age, I am guessing she is 2 or 3 years old. She was in heat when we got her, then she got pregnant, and had a puppy. The puppy is 7 weeks old today and the mother has been in heat basically since she had her. I was just wondering if this was normal, and if she will stop soon? She only had one puppy, which I thought was odd. It seems to be in good shape, but her head kind of shakes a little sometimes, is this because she is young, or what do you think? I'm just wondering your opinion, not your diagnosis. The puppy also has fleas, and I was wondering if there is a puppy flea shampoo that would be safe to use on her. Thank you for your time.

Answer
I am in a hurry so I can't go into the detail I would like. As for the mom, they usually come back into heat 3 -7 weeks after giving birth and the heat can last for a week or so. If she has been bleeding longer than this she may have a pyometria (uterine infection) and will require veterinary care. As for the puppies she should have been checked by your vet already (pups should be checked at 3 weeks, and start getting their shots ad 6, 9, and 12 weeks to make sure that they don't get rabies, parvo etc... which would be fatal to the puppy). They puppy could have open fontanels (soft spots on her head where the bones of the skull didn't grow together after birth) if this is the case it is likely that the puppy is hydrocephalic (water on the brain) which could cause the symptoms you are describing. What this is: the brain of an animal or human is surrounded in fluid yet sometimes there is too much fluid made and pressure builds up in the skull (the bones can't grow together properly) and this puts pressure on the brain of the animal which would lead to tremors (shaking of the head) as well as many other nurological signs (lethargy, stumbling, retardations, blindness, deafness, etc...). My advice is to take the mom and pup to your vet and get them checked out if you haven't already done so. Like in human birth a lot can go wrong and you should always have the mom and babies checked out before they are too old to possibly correct the problems. Hope this helps and good luck. If you have more question let me know and I will try and answer them for you, sorry for no more detail in my response but I am short on time. Hope it helped.
