Question
QUESTION: We have a new 6 month old German Sheppard that will not sleep all night. We have tried a couple different things one is to feed her later in the evening like around 8pm and taking her out for the last bathroom break around 10:00pm.She still wakes up anytime from 2-4 am and barks untill she either gets tired or someone comes in and checks on her.And she will not go back to sleep unless someone sleeps with her.How can we get her to sleep all night so everyone can rest also?
ANSWER: This is not a common problem or one I have experience solving.  Are you crating her?  If not, it is possible it could increase her security enough to go back to sleep on her own.  Other dogs may not be as bad as the young Labs I am plagued with.  Still your house and dog will be much safer with the dog in a crate when you are away.  The dog may be happier in its den than loose in the house.  It relaxes, it feels safe in its
den.  It rests, the body slows down reducing the need for water and relieving
its self.  Dogs that have been crated all along do very well.  Many of them
will rest in their crates even when the door is open.  I think the plastic
ones give the dog more of a safe, enclosed den feeling.  They are harder for
dogs to open too.    Metal ones can be put in a corner or covered with
something the dog can't pull in and chew.  Select a crate just big enough for the full grown dog to stretch out in.

Leave it some toys.  Perhaps a Kong filled with peanut butter.  Don't leave
anything in the crate the dog might chew up.  It will do fine without even any
bedding.  You will come home to a safe dog and a house you can enjoy.

A dog that has not been crated since it was little, make take some work.
Start out just putting its toys and treats in the crate.  Praise it for going
in.  If you have been able to trust it with any bedding, put that in the crate.
Feed it in the crate.  This is also an easy way to maintain order at feeding
time for more than one dog.

Use the crate only when you must  I have a short length of chain fastened to
my computer desk.  With more mats around the chair mat, this gives a place
where the puppy is with me, but about as controlled as in the crate, while
still allowing me to get some work done, or at least answer All Experts questions.

QUESTION: she is in a crate thru the day and when she sleeps.we have 2 dogs our other is a small dog 7yrs of age and she knows what she can and can't do so she gets to sleep with our son in his bedroom floor. The pup is a resuce dog and we have just had her for 3 weeks, could she be cutting teeth?and when will she sleep thru the night?

Answer
As I said this is not a common problem.  Most puppies are sleeping through the night by 2 months.  At 6 months, she should have most of her adult teeth, but teething usually doesn't lead to waking up at night.

I am sure the problem relates to being rehomed and needing to bond to a new family.  Make sure she get plenty of attention through the day.  Start obedience training.  Perhaps keep her crate in somebody's bed room at night.
