Question
how many dogs become stray in one year?

Answer
No one really knows the answer to this question, but it is a fact that over 105 million dogs and cats are born in this country each year (over 70,000 a DAY), and there are only something like 84 million households available. And a lot depends in which part of the country one lives.

In New England, the shelters are so empty that they have taken to importing homeless street dogs from places like Puerto Rico, dogs which are frequently diseased and full of parasites. These dogs "steal" homes from deserving dogs which are already here in this country, and who are then put down because no one wants them.

Here is an interesting site that says one should "think lost, not stray". Many animals get separated from their owners and are unable to find their way back home. http://www.lostapet.org/lostNotStray.html
