Foul odor

In the past few days(on & off) I have noticed a foul smell from my Jack Russell Terrier's behind and just noticed today, a spot on the couch that had the odor when he got up(clear).  It smells very, very bad. What could this be possibly?

Sounds like his anal glands need expressed. You can have a vet or groomer do it or do it yourself. Put him in the bathtub and  locate the two anal glands on either side of his anus with your fingers. You'll know when you find them because they will feel like small hard nodules, sometimes mushy. Use a washcloth or a paper towel over your hands and press inward on the glands at the same time. The fluid should be expressed and sometimes you have to repeat this to get it all out. It'll be clear and foul smelling. This needs to be done about once a month to prevent infection.
