Question
Dear Charlotte,

We have a female, 6 year old shih tzu, spayed who may be depressed at the loss of her companion shih tzu who died of old age.

To get her a companion would it be best to get her a neutered male her size or a spayed female her size. Maybe a different breed. We haven't decided yet.

Thanks for your time.

Allen

Answer
Hi Allen;
Who don't you take her down to the Humane society and/or to some of the dog rescue groups, and let her meet some of the dogs there.
She can get aquainted with some, and so can you, and is sge makes friends with one, bring it home.
Or, you could foster the one she seems to pick for a week or two. Fostering,,,,, you kep them in your home, watch to see traits of their personality ( doesn't like children, LOVES children, housebroken, jumps the fence, etc) and see how the two get along. If it doesn't work out, the dog has been observed and can be placed in the best kind of home for it, and you can foster others, or you can keep the one you foster.
We are always looking for foster homes for the dogs we rescue.
Our shelters get too full, and no-kill shelters and rescues depend on foster families to help us take care of these little critters.
All 4 of the dog we have now were rescues we fostered, and kept. When I brinbg other dogs here, these guys help me housebreal them and teach them what they need to know to find them a good home.
Sometimes they beg to keep them when I start to get them rerady to go to the adoption clinic.
Let her pick her own friend.
Charlotte
