Question
Dear Cindy lou, we are considering adding a dog to our family.  We have two boys ages 7-11.  We'd like a dog who would love them, play fetch, not shed much, and that we could train to stay close to us off leash if we are all outside.  I would prefer a small or medium sized dog (I find myself jumpy around large dogs).  I like the traits of a lab (EXCEPT size and shedding).  My kids like the little lap dogs.  Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Answer
Hello Maria, Great idea, every child should have a dog.  Now to make everyone happy.  You have basically two choices here, a dog that does not shed will usually need grooming/haircuts.  That can cost you from 40 to 60 dollars depending on where you live.  Dogs that do not require regular haircuts usually shed.  I will give you both ideal choices.  Non shedding, small to medium:  A cockapoo or a bichon are great kid dogs and will petty much play and retrieve very well with training.  A medium and very little shedding dog is a boxer.  Also with good breeding very kid friendly and will play.  Not to many small dogs tolerate kids well or play fetch and for the most part stay away from terrier types they are generally not kid friendly.  Of course there are exceptions.  But the two small dogs named above are very good cuddlers.  Even a miniture poodle can be an option.  A boxer would be closer to the personality of a lab with less shedding.  I hope this helps you some.  Thanks, Cindy lou :)
