Question
I have a boxer girl, she is 2.5 yrs old.  Ever since we brought home a new puppy (boxer boy), she has had some eye irritation/infection thing going on.  We have taken her to the vet a couple times, and have had a few medical treatments that would work, but then it comes back a few days later.  She has had gentamicin sulfate ophthalmic solution, and a different oinment after that (cant remember name).  She was also place on antibiotics with the last ointment.  Im just not sure why it keeps coming back, and the puppy doesnt seem to be affected at all (maybe not contagious?)?  Please advise

Answer

Hi Kristin,

You didn't say what kind of eye condition your dog has been diagnosed with.

Sometimes when a dog isn't on the medication long enough, the condition returns because it wasn't really "knocked out".  Since this is a recurring problem, your vet may want to do a culture of fluid of the infection, to better identify what the specific problem is, so it can be treated more efficiently.

Boxers are prone to eye problems. This site has info on the eye conditions common to Boxers:
