Question
Hi.  I'm beginning to re-landscape my backyard and the my issue is...My 10 1/2 yr old dog has had the whole backyard to do her "business" all of her life.  Is their helpful way to train her to a particular spot for easier cleanup?

Thanks

Answer
I would recommend one of two things:

A) really make a spot, pick a tree or a good sized patch and make it very dog friendly. Keep it extremely clean. You can buy "attractants" at petsmarts and online stores that will help attract the dog to that spot. There are also "scent poles" you can use. However, with her age and the fact she is used to using the entire backyard, I just don't see this being a 100% thing.

B) Your best option: Build a nice, landscape friendly, dog lot. Using white picket fence and putting it out of immediate view and maybe doing some landscaping with flowers etc around it could make it flow with the landscaping in the backyard. When you want to put her out to go to the bathroom, put her in the lot first to use the bathroom, then when she is finished let her out to romp around the yard. You can even fill the lot with pea gravel, so you can hose it down and keep it nice and clean.

Good luck!
