Allergy to Flea treatment

Question
I used the squeeze on flea treatment on my dogs, (Doxie mix) and they both started to itch incessantly for the next 24 hours, then they would chew on the foot they were using to scratch with. Have you heard of many dogs being allergic to the drops? I used the Sergeants' brand, 5 way control. I have given them both really good baths but they are still itching. Help!!!!!!

Answer
Hi Betty,

Anytime you think your dogs may be having a reaction to something you've given them you should contact your veterinarian, rather than waiting for an email response from somebody who is not a doctor!

You should wash your dogs in Dawn dish soap, avoiding getting the soap in your dogs eyes. After that, if your dogs are still itching you'll need to contact your vet.

Some of the over the counter flea and tick products seem to have more in the way of side effects, than the flea and tick products you must get through a vet's office. You might want to consider using one of those topical products, they are designed to have fewer toxic effects on the nervous system. Brands to consider are: Advantage, Frontline (or Top Spot), and Revolution.

Sergeants Customer Service number is 800-224-7387, you might want to contact them to see what they suggest.

Best of luck,

Patti
