Adopted Female Lab cross

Question
Hi, we recently adopted a year old spayed lab/shepherd cross who first of all has grown up sleeping with the old owner. We have a large yard with a big dog house and would eventually like her to sleep outside. We've had her only 2 days and she wakes up at 4 am to go outside then whines to come back in and then starts to dig out under the fence if we don't get up. What do you suggest? We DON'T want her sleeping in our bedroom. Also she has some white goo that seeps out of her eyes. We wipe it in the morning but it comes back right away. Is this typical?
Thanks in advance

Answer
The white goo could be an infection or allergies. Allergies would be my guess since you say the discharge is white, but since you have only had her for 2 days, I would take her to the vet just to be sure.

The decision ultimately lies with you, but I would encourage you not to put her outside at night, especially if she's already trying to dig out from under your fence. Clearly she does not want to be out there alone, and if you force her to, she could end up getting out of the fence, becoming destructive and digging up your entire yard or tearing up things that are back there, or becoming a nuisance barker.

She doesn't have to sleep in your bedroom, but why can she not have a dog bed somewhere >>else<< in the house to sleep on?

You might consider putting in a dog door so she can let herself out and back in at 4am, without waking you up to let her out. Then she can choose whether she wants to sleep outside or in, also.
