Question
Hi,
I have an 13 year old wheaton who seems to be sleeping more and more. Is this because of his age? He has been checked by the vet and he is physically fine. I walk him a few times a day, however. he seems to be more interested in sleeping. also, he no longer can jump up on our bed...is this age? What is the typical life span for wheatons. This dog is my best friend. Thanks so much
regards
Doug

Answer
Hi Doug,

It's perfectly normal for a 13 year old dog to spend more time sleeping, than he used to.

The average life span for a Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier is 12-14 years. That's just an average, it's possible for your dog to live longer.

It's also normal (and to be expected) that an elderly dog would not be able to jump up, or down off of furniture as he used to. You might be able to train your dog to use a low foot stool to get up onto a bed, but he should also be taught not to jump off the bed, as he could easily hurt himself.
Make sure your dog has s comfortable bed on the floor, if he can't jump up. He'll be just as happy to lay there, instead.

As long as your dog enjoys a walk, and is able to do it, continue to walk him. Gentle exercise is important for older dogs. It's okay to walk slow, it's still good for your dog.

It's very common for older dogs to have health concerns. If you notice your dog suddenly stops eating, or seems to be limping, you should not delay in having him examined by your veterinarian. Prompt medical care often translates to a quicker recovery.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
