Question
We have a 10 yr old male mini labradoodle approx. 32.5 lbs with Addison's disease.  Takes monthly percorten injections and daily prednisone for Addison's.  Recently our dog had stomach surgery to remove a foreign body and when he was xrayed they found he had bladder stones.  We are awaiting results of urine culture but based on xrays and urine PH the Vet thinks he has struvite stones and recommends putting him on Hills S/D.
Our dog is on a commercial raw diet Nature's Variety.  I am concerned about the nutritional value of the science diet and am afraid that while it may dissolve the stones it could cause a host of other problems.  Our dog is prone to allergies, ear infections, and problems with anal sacs.  He has never thrived on commercial Kibble or canned foods.  Our dog does not currently have a bladder infection and has only been diagnosed with an infection on 2 occasions several years ago.  When he has had infection it has not presented as the typical bladder infection.  He did not have to urinate frequently or show signs of pain or straining. Our vet thinks the stones may have been caused by hidden/undiagnosed infections or is it possible that the stones are sterile.  I read one of the other posts related to struvite bladder stones and it said that sterile stones (not caused by infection) are rare but it can happen.  Would it be safe to continue our raw diet and try some natural supplements such as Wysong's Biotic PH and Solid Gold's Berry Balance for a month or two and if the stones don't dissolve try the Science Diet S/D or would it be better to start him on Science Diet right away.  Also does the Science Diet S/D need to be given along with antibiotics? I saw somewhere that it said both needed to be given in conjunction but our vet has not prescribed antibiotics perhaps because we are awaiting the culture.  Should we be concerned if our vet does not prescribe an antibiotic along with the Hills S/D?  Thanks in advance.

HI Diana and Family;  I can help you with some recipes for home-cooking.  I am thinking the Nature's Variety may be a bit too rich for his nutritional needs.  You are right about the Hill's product having poor ingredients!

Let me know what kind of crystals and stones your dog has.  The Vet doesn't need to offer a antibiotic unless he/she feels there is infection present.

Yes, I would start on the Solid Gold's Berry product ASAP.
It can only help.
Also, most of my clients are on the NuVET Product /  Wafer supplement:
I highly suggest the NuVET Wafer per day;  I work with a number of kideny stone clients on a montly basis.  The NuVET product helps to balance but also aides is reduction of inflammation.
Reduces future urinary infections.  Helps to re-build the immune system...
