Basset hound kibble reccomendations?

Question
Hi   I wanted to get some opions on what brand(s) of kibble would be best for a bassethound? is there anything different needed in a bassets diet compaired to other breeds?  Are bassets prone to allergies would you know?

Answer
Although there are breed specific chows out there, perhaps not for Bassets, I suspect they are nothing but marketing hype.  Trust me, there is plenty of marketing hype out there often masquerading as facts.  Chances are your dog will do fine on any of the major brands.  I don't even have any reliable information proving the cheap stuff isn't OK.  The one thing I can say for sure is that the grain based chows produce larger, softer stools that are harder to clean up than the meat based ones.

As far as allergies go, breeding is a very important factor.  Too many dogs are bred by people that either don't know to avoid breeding stock with tendencies to allergy, or don't care.  Same for some other physical problems.  Yes I am sure there are Bassets out there with allergies.  I am also sure there are ones free of allergies.  The Basset may not be popular enough to attract puppy mills and backyard breeders.  I see tons of questions from totally clueless people breeding mini Dachshunds and toy Poodles.

One thing on allergies is choosing a type of protein and sticking to it.  Switch around from lamb and chicken and etc. when a dog is young, and if it does develop allergies later,  it makes it harder to work around.
