Pugs and their palets

Question
I have a 13 year old pug. She just turned 13 today. She went in to have an endoscopy to see why she is coughing so much. While on the table and just coming out from under the anesthesia she quit breathing and her heart stopped. The Vet was able to bring her back with CPR and finally had to use epinephrine. She was legally gone for 1 minute plus.I was told that her heart was enlarged. They do not know why. Other than that Petunia is a very healthy dog for her age. She is on med's for seizures as well as 10 mgs a day for the palet. Question: Should I opt for the surgery to cut her palet back? I assume you can see why I am so concerned after loosing her and then gaining her back. I am not ready to loose her , but at the same time do not want her to suffer. She and I are hikers together and my best friend. I just want what is best for her. Please help....I am at a loss as whether to have the surgery or just continue to let her cough. The Vet has assured me that her coughing is coming from the palet covering or overlapping her esophagus and cutting off her airway.
I know that age is a BIG factor in this. I just want to make sure that I have I guess, another opinion. Thank you for any advice you may have.     Happy Holidays,  Luana  ;o)

Answer
Luana,

I think that at 13 years old, I would only do surgery if it is absolutely necessary.  I think that since she already had an reaction to the anesthesia, I would not want to take a chance again.

Another option would be to find a vet that would use another type of anesthesia.  Our vet gives a spinal and we have never had a problem with that.  I think that would be a lot safer for your pug.

Hope that helps,
Christine Puetz
