Question
sometims when my 4 year old female pug drinks water i think she breathes in some water and then has trouble breathing. she hunches over, hacks and snorts and seems in distress. this usually only lasts 1 or 2 minutes or less. tonight this happened and was the worse i ever saw. she is still having trouble on and off after 1 1/2 hrs. how can i help her and how can i prevent this?

Answer
Robin,

Pugs do tend to have problems when they drink or eat too fast.  About the only thing you can do is try to keep her from drinking too fast.  This could be done by not letting her get too thirsty.  Make sure she has water available all the time.

If that doesn't work, you might have to monitor her when she drinks.  The next step would be to see your vet about the problem.
