PERTHESES DISORDER

Question
I just took my 1 year old pug for x-rays and found out he had Pertheses Disorder.  They tell me this is a common injury that in small dogs like pugs and it occurs due to a fall and landed on the leg the wrong way.  They are recommending surgery.  I just wanted to know if you knew anything about this disorder and is surgery the only option?

Answer
I would get a second opinion from a orthopedic veterinarian if you can. I have not had this with a pug but have had experience with a cat.

I believe they remove the ball that has broken off from the femur(?) and the hip joint forms a new somewhat ball in the socket. My daughters cat had this done on both hips years ago and Ricki the monster cat acts perfectly normal.

It never hurts to get a second opinion.

thanks and Good luck!
