My 8 year old Pug Female

Question
My pug was only 8 years old and she passed away unexpectedly 11/27/09. It seemed she was sick all week and not wanting to eat her dry dog food but would eat turkey and milk bones. She also drank alot of water within the last past week. We noticed she had lost a little bit of weight also. We have no idea why she could have died because it was so quick. She went while we were sleeping. She had a bowel movement and it was really dark. I don't know what could've happened to her but it is really sad and we miss her so much, even our bull mastiff is depressed. They were best friends. I rarely see my father cry and he has cried so much about her passing. It is really sad and I need closure on what happened to her if you could please help me. Thanks for your consideration!

Answer
Melinda,

Sorry to hear of your loss!

It is impossible to say why your pug died, without an autopsy.  It is normal that she would have had a bowel movement after she died.  I don't know if the dark color would point to a cause.

I believe that there was probably just something wrong and without any clear symptoms, it could not have been prevented.  Sometimes there are just thing wrong that we cannot do anything about.

At least you know that she did not suffer with a long illness.  Hopefully that can be of some comfort to you.

Spend a lot of time with your mastiff and watch him close.  It can be very traumatic for a dog when he loses his buddy.
