pug housetraining

Question
I have a pug puppy have had her a little over a week. She was trained with her brothers and sisters at the home I bought her to use papers (pee pads purchased at walmart) to do her business. I bought a dog litter box, hoping to train her to use that and add dog litter a little at a a time. I live in Maine and we have had some cold icy weather lately, had reservations about taking her outside until March. I have a relative with two Papillions who use a litter box and do fairly well, so thought it would be a good option instead of papers for her. The pellets in the litter from petco look like rabbit pellets and not very comfortable for starters. I added a little bit into her litter pan, put some of her poop in so she would know it was her area, put her in over and over every 15 minutes to let her know this is what it is for. She went to the bathroom outside of the pan and would not use it even with small amounts of litter. She has her litter pan in her playpen area with bed, food dishes and toys. At night she is in a crate, with a pee pad on one end. If I keep her up late until 10:30 or so she has gone without soiling it, but most of the times soils it at night, as she is young and cannot hold it yet. Is it too late to start her outside once they already started her on the papers? One of the petco employees said he tells everyone do not use papers they will think it is ok to go in the house. My vet suggested not using them either, but at the time I had planned on adding litter and litter training her, that way no worries about mistakes or making it outside in time. Any information would be helpful I want to steer her in the right direction and get her doing something consistant. Should I try a different litter, or is she too used to the pads to change now? Thank you, Swwave2@fairpoint.net

Answer
I would take her outside to do her business. Reward her with much praise and a bit of a treat for good behavior. You know she is supposed to use the potty pan but it must totally confuse her as to it's proper use. As long as she is not outside for long periods of time, she should be o.k. to take out to potty.

Thanks and good luck and kiss the dear little one for me.
