Question
My 2 1/2 year old toy Rudy has recently started peeing on our bed.  I've read some of your answers here, but they're not *quite* his scenario.  I am home all day, as I am enrolled in online classes, and he isn't caged while I'm home so it isn't that he's lonely.  He has been neutered about 6 months ago.  He's been to the vet recently for an ear infection, and he doesn't like receiving his ear stuff; I also recently gave him a haircut and the night I did that is when he started peeing on our bed.  Maybe he was mad about those two things?  He also has a cage that we sometimes put him in and sometimes don't when we go places, depending on how long we will be gone (he goes in when it's more than an hour, stays loose when it's less).

The last time he peed (last night) it was about 3 AM and he came up by my head on my pillows and let loose a TON of pee and I happened to wake up and find it and my fiance got really mad and he doesn't like dogs much to begin with so one more time peeing on the bed and Rudy is OUT.  Please help, I love this dog to pieces and don't want to give him away.

Answer
I think this is a clear case of a challenge for leadership.  They are quite common at that age.  Many small dogs are masters at having their own way.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/  For more on being top dog, see http://www.dogbreedinfo.com./topdogrules.htm  I think rule #13 is don't let the dog sleep in bed with you.  I would exile him to his crate at night.  He won't like it, but tough, you are in charge.  Keep the bedroom door closed to keep him out when you aren't there.
