My toy poodle just wont eat her food!

Question
Hello Kim,

This is Teddy again and thanks for your help last time. This time my question is i give my toy poodle dry food but she just won't eat them! My friends say that you have to give her tough love and just leave the food there and also not giving her treats and table scraps. It has been 2 days and she still hasn't touched her dry food, also this morning she had yellow foam on her mouth! I tried mixing in the can food with the dry food however she only picks up the can food! My friend also told me that can food is bad for my poodle's teeth and also that it could lead to major illnesses during her senior years. So in the end do you think i should just give her can food? Or do you think i should just keep giving her tough love?

Thank you

Teddy

Answer
Hello again Teddy,
While I don't think you should let your dog eat just anything I do think that she should eat something healthy.  Her dry dog food is going to be the best for her as it has the vitamins and nutrients that she needs to be healthy, but if she won't eat it, you need to try something else to get her to eat it.
Try soaking it in the chicken or beef broth until it soaks the broth up and the kibble swells up some.  It will make the food soft, but at least she will start to eat it.
DON'T GIVE HER ANYTHING ELSE TO EAT OTHER THAN HER DOG FOOD.  If you want to give her some canned food, mix about 2 spoonfuls of canned food into a small handful of dry food.  Be sure that you buy the chopped canned food, not the chunks because the chopped will mix good with her dry food.  You don't want her to eat around the dry food, but rather eat all the dry and canned food.

Straight canned food isn't good for a dogs teeth because it doesn't provide the scraping action that helps get the tartar off the dogs teeth.  Most canned dog food won't make your dog sick as it also has vitamins and nutrients in it, but its not as good for your dog as the dry food.

Give this a try and if she still doesn't eat after a few days, let me know and I will give you a few more suggestions.

Later,
Kim
