Addisons, bladder stones, dog food, etc

Question
QUESTION: My six year old standard poodle has Addison's. Recently he had severe gastroenteritis and spent a couple nights in the hospital until they could get the bloody diarrhea under control. They told me they did an ultrasound and Xray which revealed bladder stones. Two weeks after recovering from his hospital visit, our vet removed the bladder stones which turned out to be calcium oxalate. So now he's on Hills U-D dog food. No more people food for him.
I guess I'm wondering what the alternatives are, if there are any. I realize that having Addison's, which is being treated with prednisone, means that his daily dose can cause the formation of bladder stones. I figure this means I need to be extra vigilant that he doesn't eat outside his diet. He's a great eater so I'm not too worried so far.

ANSWER: Hello Erin,
I am going to have to study this a bit more, as I am aware of Poodles with Addisons but have never expirenced it with mine.  I will check into this further and will get back to you.  I will check out diets for Addison dogs and see if there is anything different that you can try.  Give me a couple of days or so, and I will get back to you.

Thanks,
Kim

QUESTION: Kim,
He's responding really well to his current Addison's treatment. My big concern is keeping him from having bladder stones again. I mention the Addison's because part of his treatment requires a daily dose of prednisone which can contribute to the formation of calcium oxalate stones. I am feeding him Hill's U-D because that's what the vet prescribed.

Answer
During my findings, almost everyone suggested Hills formula dog foods because the formulas are specifically developed for dogs with stomach issues such as Stones, Ulcers, weak digestion, etc.

I did find a website that has recipes for homemade dog foods that cater to a dog with stones needs.
You can go to it here:

I have also come to find that there isn't much info about dogs with bladder stones.  Most of the information that I found said the same thing.

I hope this helps you some.  I wish I could be of more help; if you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
