Yorkiepoo raw butt

Question
I have a 3 year old yorkiepoo. He is more Poodle than Yorkie. Today when i took him out to use the restroom, he took longer than usual. When he came in I noticed he had poop in his hair so i put him in his cage while i ran water to give him a bath. I came back a hour later and there was 2 piles of poop and a pool of liquidy poop. While i was giving him a bath, he growled whenever i got close to his butthole. Thats when i noticed it was very red and raw looking. I am very concerned, what should i do ?

Answer
Hello Kaleshia,
What has happened with your dogs bottom is that he got some poo stuck over his rectum and wasn't able to push Poo past the dried on poo.  When you washed his rear end, you washed off the dried, stuck on poo on his butt and this made it able for him to pass the remaining poo that was in his intestines.
When you have a long haired dog such as a Yorkie or Poodle, you have to watch the hair around their butt, because they can get covered over with Poo that sticks in the loose hair around the anus and this can cause a backup in the poo flow.  Your dog can get impactions or even infections if this poo and hair isn't removed.  The reason that your dogs butt was red and raw is because the poo had been stuck on there for quite some time.

The next time your dog goes to the groomer, you need to ask that they shave around the anus and that they express the anal glands.  This will help keep the hair short around the butthole so that the poo won't stick.  Doing the anal glands will help your dogs rear from becoming sensitive if his anal glands are full.
If you have some triple antibotic, such as NeoSporin, you can apply it to your dogs raw butt, but he may lick it off so try it but don't expect him to keep it on.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
