Question
i have a jack russell terrior he is about 3 years old. I will let him out all
the time, but right after he comes in or sometimes after a little while, he will
come right in and pee on something, and he knows when he does it because he will
run and hide, and when i correct him i show im the pee, well make him smell it,
and i put him in his cage. while in his cage he wines and wimpers, and wont shut
up, he is a brat of a dog, and he always has to have attention, and trust me he
gets plenty of it!! He is like a baby. We are building a new house, and my mom
said that if he dosent stop peeing now, we have to get rid of him, and i cant
because i am so close to him. Please help me get him to stop peeing in the
house!!

Answer
Hi Liz,
Male dogs mark their territory by urinating on things, especially where they reside.  Unless you absolutely get completely rid of the smell he has left there, he will continue to urinate on it over and over. He is not being stubborn or trying to misbehave, he's only being a "male" and letting any potential outsiders know that this is HIS house. Even when we clean carpets, floors, etc. with regular cleaning products, the dogs can still smell the uring through it and will continue to "go" in the same spot.
It might actually be good that you are moving because the new place will not have any of his past urine smells there. It's important to train him NOT to pee in the house, but if he DOES, make sure you use "Uring Gone" or "Gonzo" or "Natures Miracle" which are specialized products that take the urine smell completely out household items. The best deterrent to train a dog to stop going in the house is to catch him in the act. When you see him start to lift his leg, that's when you grab him, yell "NO!" and take him immediately outside to finish. Praise him lavishly when he goes outside so he will get the idea that this is where you want him to go. I wish you the best of luck with him!
