Question
Hi, Carol -
First, THANK YOU so much for your advice on my mom's 14 year old JRT - Hurley.  As I talked to her, I realized that he does not howl through the night, just a couple of times through the night - sometimes it is because he went the bathroom on the floor, other times - no reason that we can figure out.  If my Mom is home or we are all in visiting, Hurley sleeps through the day - doesn't howl or anything.  He does, however, continually walk in circles - small circles, big circles.  We don't think he sleeps at night - all he does is walk in circles.  Do you have any idea why this is?  Also, he is partially blind.  The vet has said that Hurley does not appear to have any major problems - he is on over the counter drugs for his arthritis.  It is a very hard decision to put Hurley down as he has times that he is the little guy he always was - chasing birds and squirrels.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks again and have a wonderful holiday.

Sincerely,
Holly Warner

Answer
Hi Holly ~

I don't even know him and I love Hurley :))
I know it's so very hard to watch your pet growing old and failing. 14 years is a long time to live and I know by listening to you, he has had a great life.  I believe the howling and circling behavior can all pretty much be blamed on his deteriorating age.
BUT
There are some outside factors that you should rule out; especially at this time of year.
1) Poinsettias - poisonous to dogs
2) Chocolate - toxic, especially in large quantities
3) Antifreeze - tastes good to dogs, but deadly
4) bit by a rabid animal seeking warmth

These can cause strange neurological behavior, and if you have any suspicion that it could be the case, take him to your vet. Other signs would also be vomiting, lethargy, aggression, and anorexia.

I believe the poor dear is just getting old.  As long as he's not in pain, just continue to support and love him.
Good luck! and hugs to Hurley.
Carol (I was almost Holly too :))))
