JRT puppys clear liquid from vulva

Question
My little puppy is just over 25 weeks (she will be exactly 6 months in a few days). Tonight I noticed that she was wet. I checked her and saw a drop of a clear liquid on her vulva. She has not bled and I have heard that the clear liquid only comes after the blood. I am very worried because she is the first female that I have owned. Please tell me if this is normal for a jack Russell terrier at this age.

Thanks in Advance

Answer
Hello Amanda,

Usually dogs do not have their first heat cycle until they are a year old or older. What you saw and felt is just natural female discharge that all females have. When she is starting her heat cycle you'll first notice that her vulva gets larger and swollen and then tiny little drops of blood will be on the floor (or your lap!)
The heat cycle has three stages, proestrus, estrus, anestrus.
It is in the second stage that they can get pregnant and the red blood discharge has usually turned to an amber color.
The entire cycle usually lasts about a month, and they go into heat usually every 6 months or so, but some dogs cycles are sporadic.
To avoid all of this worry, why haven't you had her spayed?
Hope this helped!
