Healthy running distance

Question
Hello Carol,

I own a  8 months Jack Russell Terrier, and we love going outside for a run; we do this about 2 or 3 times a week and we usually run about 4 to 5 miles each time, and even lately we have been doing this while I'm on a icicle and she is without a leash, and she seems to enjoy it a lot.

However my concern is if this distance is too much for her, I've reading about injuries and arthritis, so I would like to make sure that it's ok before we continue to do it.

Thanks a lot!

Answer
Hello Jorge,
I think 5 miles is a little long for her at 8 months old - after a year she should be able to handle that distance just fine. Cut it down to 3 miles for the next 2 months, then 4 miles for 2 months and up to 5 miles when she is a year old.  Make sure she gets plenty of water and rest in between. Walking is also great fun and excellent exercise for Jacks too!!  I can tell you love her!! Good luck!
