Answer
Hi Anita,

This really isn't something you can teach a dog. Even 15 year old dogs worry that their owners aren't coming back. The best thing you can do is set up a routine of things to do when you are going out. Sometimes this has a calming affect on the dog because they know what to expect.  For instance, when I go out I do the same exact thing every single time so my dogs know that I will be going out.
I take my keys out so they can hear them -
I brush my teeth
I put on some soft music
I put them in their crates and then right before I go out the door I give them something special to chew on while I'm gone. Fill a KONG with some kibble and peanut butter - or a flavored raw hide. Something that will keep them busy and occupied while you are out. It's important not to keep them crated for more than 4 hours at a time. If you will be longer than 4 hours, have someone come over to take him out and give him a break.
If you follow the same exact routine everytime you go out, eventually (hopefully) he will calm down and look forward to that special treat in his crate. Some dogs just won't calm down until you get back, but if you try to make it as pleasant for him as possible, the intensity of his fear may subside a little. Good luck!
