Question
QUESTION: I'm looking to buy a Parson's from a breeder.  It is CKC not AKC registered.  Though I don't really care about the papers.  My question is that the pup is  2 days old and the breeder sent me pictures.  In the pictures the pup has a pink nose.  Will it change to black or will it remain pink/liver colored?

ANSWER: Hi Jill,

To answer your question about the nose....YES the pink nose will turn black.
Now I'll jump up on my soapbox and ask you to be very careful when buying a puppy. I'm concerned why you couldn't ask the breeder about the nose?? He/she should be very accessible to you for any and all questions, no matter how silly they seem. Another thing that is concerning me is that he/she sent pictures.... couldn't you go to see the puppies in person? Be very careful when buying puppies over the internet! There are so many sneaky ways for puppy millers to get to your heart. Lastly a red flag is raised when you tell me that the dog is CKC registered. The Continental Kennel Club is a joke. ANYONE can register their dogs through this club.  I am copying a long page from my website for you to read which is about puppy millers. Maybe the breeder you are buying from is reputable, but you have to do the research and make sure where that puppy (and it's parents) come from.
I just don't want you to be sorry down the road. You will have to use your own judgement but there are too many red flags here for me to be comfortable with your breeder - but I could be wrong. If there is any way for you to actually visit the breeder, meet the dogs parents, get references from real people, and a written health guarantee.  I will even research the breeder for you if you want, please just email me back at carolf1209@yahoo.com with the name and state the breeder is in.  Here is the page from my website,

I hope you find it useful....
and I hope you are working with a reputable breeder.
Best of luck Jill.

QUESTION: Carol~
Thank you for responding do quickly to my question.  To follow-up and ease your mind...I have spoken via email to the breeder several times, I think it is a teenager.  She said I can come see the puppies in 2 weeks, when their eyes are open.  I did email her also last night about the nose thing, but wanted another source to compare the answer with.   My Jack will be a farm dog, so papers aren't as important to me as personality.  She does have the parents on the premise, so I will check them out as well.  The main thing that is bothering me about this, is that I got my deposit in first, so I get first choice of the boys, so she sent me pictures and asked me to choose, and then she would send the pictures on to the other buyers.  I emailed her back last night and told her I wasn't comfortable picking from pictures and that I would like to come down and pick one.  I think her request is more out of ignorance than anything.  What do you think about that situation?  The breeder offers a year guarantee on eyes and hips. I found the breeder online because it was only 1 hour from me.  fabriziusfarm.com

Answer
Hi Jill,

The breeder looks fine and that is great news that you can go visit.
The CKC thing is a little weird though. They look like they are experienced with Labradors but this is their first Jack Russell litter.
The father of the puppies is recently acquired and it might be nice to know where he came from - but the CERF guarantee is a great thing.
It's a GOOD thing when questions are asked.
You should still take a ride out to their facility just to take a look around and meet the parents of the puppies and the people themselves. You might get a sneak peak at the puppies if the mother dog is out of the room.  I always welcome people to my home at anytime - if they have nothing to hide they will welcome an unscheduled visit.
Definitely stick to your guns and meet the puppies in person before picking one out. The other clients can wait, they've been waiting 4 months, another couple of months won't kill them.
Thanks for easing my mind, I have seen so many nice people hurt and/or ripped off by irresponsible "breeders". This place looks fine, but still go visit your new baby first.
Write anytime you need JRT advice, you're in for a ride!!
Best of luck and keep up the great work in your new puppy endeavor!
Take care,
Carol
