Question
We just got an 8 week old JRT.We were feeding him 3 times a day a 1/4 cup each feeding. He looked liked he was loosing weight so we increased it to 1/3 cup each feeding. Now he still wants more but his stool is getting loose. Can we go to twice a day and how much would be right. He will eat untill the bag is empty if u let him..

Answer
Hello Parker,
For an eight week old puppy that is a lot of food. Typically for puppies, I feed about a quarter cup twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. It increases a little bit as they get older, and my adult dogs eat 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening. Jacks do like to eat and you need to be in control of his intake.
The runny stool is concerning. If you switched brands of food from what he was eating at the breeders, that could cause some upset and it will take a little time for his body to adjust, but the stool should eventually get back to normal.
Secondly, he should have had two doses of de-worming by now and if he was very recently de-wormed by the breeder, that could also be a cause of loose stools that would last for a day or two.  If he was NOT de-wormed by the breeder or by yourself, he could HAVE worms which is causing the runny stools too.
Lastly, weight loss is indicative of worms or possibly something worse (like Parvo-virus).  It's hard to say without actually seeing the puppy, but it could be one of many things. You are the best judge right now and need to be the investigator. If he gets worse, take him to the vet for a thorough examination and cultures to rule out worms or other problems. It's VERY important that the puppy stay hydrated, make sure he is drinking plenty of water.
Good luck with your new puppy.
