Question
Hello, I just want to know the best way to train my 9 week old rack Russell when it comes to going to the toilet! we have been using puppy training mats and they don't seem to work, she goes wherever she likes. we pick her up and move her onto the mat everytime but she is not getting it. what else can we do to stop her weeing and pooing on the carpet??

Answer
Hi Claire,
Congratulations on your new puppy!
The first thing you need is PATIENCE.
She is only 9 weeks old!! That is like expecting a 6 month old baby to know how to use the bathroom.!
The absolute BEST way to train a puppy is to take her outside constantly. Every hour if you can. Even through the night if possible.
She won't pee/poop everytime, but when she does, you have to be extremely exuberant and praise her "good girl"!!! Give her a tiny piece of cheese or chicken as a reward everytime she pees/poops outside. When she makes a mistake in the house don't yell or get angry, just clean it up and keep taking her outside. It is hard work and exhausting but it will pay off in a few weeks. She will learn by POSITIVE reinforcement that going outside is what she's supposed to do.  I do understanding it is frustrating training but she is so little and so new, and really doesn't understand what you want until you repeat, repeat, repeat.  It will come I promise, but you have to have lots of patience.  GOOD LUCK!!!!
