Jack Russell Friend

Question
My wife and I have a three year old, spayed Jack Russell and are looking to possibly make an addition to the family. There are a couple things that are weighing on my decision and I wondered what type of feedback you could offer...
1. We have an 18 month old daughter who would LOVE to have a dog that loves her back.
2. To tie into that, our Jack seems to be "freaked out" by my daughter. We recently started our Jack on a drug called Colmacalm(sp?) and it may work, but again, I would love a dog that not only gets along with our Jack, but would love kids.

My first question is, do you think this will help our Jack, having a companion (I have heard from friends/dog sitters that she loves running around and playing with other dogs) ? and two what type of dog would you recommend?

Answer
Hi Greg,

I'm going to be perfectly honest here and tell you that I don't think it's a good idea at all. Your jack is stressed enough as it is, he really needs to be in a good mental state to take on another dog.
Your daughter is much too young to bring a puppy into the house or an adopted dog with issues. It a recipe for disaster and a LOT of work!
Make sure your 3 year old jack gets A LOT of exercise, there's nothing like a good workout to de-stress a dog.  You might also want to get him enrolled in a doggie day care or play care so that he can get some more canine socialization before considering getting another one.  Hope I didn't bum you out, but that's my opinion :(

Take care and good luck!
