nursing dog with hereditary mange

Question
I have a dog that has the hereditary mange. She is nursing and the skin around her nipples are raw. Is there anything I can do for her? What can I feed the puppies? They are two weeks old today.

Answer
Hi Martha,
It's hard to give medical advise when you can't actually see the dog.... I would call the vet and ask what to do about the inflamed skin - but in my unprofessional opinion I would rub a tiny bit of oil (vegetable) on the skin (safe for the puppies) to help soothe them, and then after the pups are weaned continue with whatever treatment you usually give her for the mange.
You can get some Esbilac (puppy milk) from any pet store to supplement the puppies if necessary but they should still be nursing for another 2 weeks.
Best of luck
