Growling JRT

Question
I have a 1 year old, male, neutered, and for the most part, well mannered JRT. If approached while resting, but not asleep, he will often growl and bare his teeth but will not bite. I discipline him with a stern word and place him outdoors but the behaviour persists. He also does not seem to like being patted at any time. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Neil,

He is most likely viewing this "punishment" as a reward -  most dogs want to go out, so if you are letting him out after bad behavior he is being taught that if you growl  you get to go out.  Continue with the stern word (NO!!) and put him in a time out in his crate.  When dogs growl they think they are the dominant one in the pack (family) so you have to re-establish your authority with him. Enter the house BEFORE him, eat your dinner BEFORE him, don't play tug of war games that encourage growling, don't let him sleep at eye level with you, he should be lower, and reinforce your position in the pack.  Best of luck!!
