Question
Hi,  I have a 3-year old female Jack Russell that has a habit of not doing everything business wise when she goes outside; she only does a little bit and then after we leave she does it inside when nobody is home; sometimes she also smashes it.  Also, it seems that she doesn't want to hold it; and just goes no matter where she is or what she's doing.  We have been fighting this battle for 3 years and would appreciate any advise on how we could make her do all of her business outside.

Answer
Gigi,
You have to start from the beginning and retrain her as if she is a new puppy. The fastest and most efficient way is to take her outside every hour on the hour and praise her very much when she does her business. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Somehow in the past she wasn't completely trained and is continuing the misinformed behavior. Start fresh, have patience and you can definitely re-teach her the right way. Dogs learn better with POSITIVE reinforcement (praise) than they do with negative (scolding or getting angry AFTER the fact). Don't give her much opportunity to go inside - it should take about 2 weeks and she should be OK. Best of luck!
