Question
I have a 7 year old spayed JRT, she is a sweet obedient dog. The problem we have is she does not seem to feel like she is part of our family pack. She will go into another room rather than stay with the family at time she will not come when called and we have to go and physically get her and the hold her for her to stay with us. She is very fearful of loud noises and does not do well in crowds of people she would much rather be by herself. Is this typical for the breed.

Answer
Hi Dee,
A couple of questions come to mind... did you get her as a rescue dog? She very well may be timid around humans if she was abused in any way. If not, she could have been the runt of the litter and "pushed around" by her littermates, and is just a submissive dog. If it's noisy let her be by herself, you're not likely turn her into a party animal at 7 years of age ;)
Just keep loving her and bringing her in the room with you and reassuring her that you won't let anything bad happen to her. Start a little at a time....like 15 minutes every night the first week, a half hour the next week, an hour the week after that etc.... until hopefully she will feel calm enough to relax with her family. Don't force her or it will backfire, just go slowly and hopefully she'll come around. She might never like to be in a big crowd and if thats the case, it's just who she is.  No dog is really "typical" - there are so many variables that lend themselves to their dispositions. Sounds like you have a sweetheart. Wishing you luck.
