Question
I have a 12 week old Jack Russell Shorty.  I know how important it is for him to get exercise, and my plan is to walk him for an hour in the morning and my boyfriend will walk him for an hour in the afternoon, plus park trips and play-time.  I am wondering how soon I can start this?  Do I need to build up to this or can I start with an hour walk right away?  He has had his third round of vaccinations, his fourth will be in about 3 1/2 weeks. Should I wait until his fourth set of vaccinations?  Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Amy
Congratulations on your new puppy!
I'm glad you're already on a good exercise schedule with the little guy, he'll appreciate it and thrive!
It's best to start slow when they are puppies and gradually increase your walk time as he gets older.
A half hour brisk walk at this age is appropriate, and increase it by 15 minutes each month he gets older. By the time he is a year old, he will be able to easily go for that hour walk or even longer.
If he SITS while you are walking him, he's trying to tell you he's tired, so pay attention to his body language and make sure that he gets plenty of water after any exercise.
Best of luck with your new little guy!!
