Question
Hi,
We adopted a 2yr old Jack Russell, our yard is to large to fence.  We live in the country and I would like to train her to stay in the yard so we can play with her.
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello!
You can train your dog not to go beyond the perimeters of your yard, but it's MUCH easier when you start as a puppy.
It's that continuous "NO!" that you do for months and months as they are growing and learning... Of course you can try with your two year old but he might not take to it as quickly as you would like. Especially if you have squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, etc... that can be oh so very tempting!!! You'll need to take him out on the leash every day, at least 5 times a day and walk the perimeter of the yard. You will quickly pull up on his leash when he crosses the line with a firm NO! Consistency, patience and repeting constantly for at least a few months should do the trick.  After a while you can put him out there with a long piece of rope tied to him and let him go. Test him to see if he will go beyond where he is allowed. If he stays within "legal" limits, give a GOOD BOY! If he goes beyond where he is allowed you'll need to stomp on the rope to stop him in his place before he goes any further.
You can use this method in training as well.
GOOD LUCK!!!  Congratulations on your new family member!

An invisible fence is a worthwhile investment. You put a special collar on them and they get a little "buzz" that reminds them that they may not go beyond this point. Little white flags are put up to help your dog learn the perimeter too.
