Question
I HAVE TWO HUNT TERRIERS A MALE 2YEARS AND HAS BEEN FIXED. A FEMALE ALMOST 1 YR. WHO JUST WENT THROUGH HEAT.  SHE NOW DISPLAYS SIGNS SHE MAY BE PREGNANT. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT MY MALE WHO'S FIXED GOT HER PREGNANT? SHE WAS NOT AROUND ANY OTHER DOGS.

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

It is extremely unlikely she is actually pregnant. She very well could be displaying signs of a false pregnancy, which mimics real pregnancy. They actually produce milk and get swollen bellies but there are no puppies inside!  If she gets worse you can take her to the veterinarian to have a "shot" that will help change the hormones and end the pseudocyesis. It will make her more comfortable and dry up any milk.   When there is a male dog around - even a neutered one - they still go through the motions of breeding and sometimes the female dogs hormones just go on auto pilot and it LOOKS and FEELS like real pregnancy to the female.  It's not fun but don't worry, I doubt you will be having any puppies.  Take her to the vet to be absolutely positively sure,
I've seen this happen many times. Take care and good luck!
