Question
we had a jack russell before but he was aggressive towards me and my 7 yr old son and had to leave us. we love the breed and are considering getting a female JR, would a female be calmer and not so full on?

Answer
Hi Sarah,
I know how you feel about the breed, I happen to agree whole heatedly!!  Females generally have a bit of a calmer disposition, but what you really want to consider is an original Shortie or Irish Jack Russell Terrier! I can almost guarantee your first Jack was a Parsons, which are great dogs but extremely hunt-oriented, athletic, energetic, and very independent minded. Which is a nice way to say stubborn and sometimes aggressive. Do some research (start with me!) and read about the smaller jack russell. They have shorter legs, MUCH calmer dispositions, much more family oriented, love to be with people, non-aggressive and absolutely LOVING dogs. They still love to run, love to play, love to be outside, and are excellent at agility or racing etc, if that's what you like to do. I just can't say enough about the breed, which I suppose is why I am on this forum! I have four of them myself.
I have no idea where you are writing from but I am in New England in Massachusetts and know 3 breeders of the shorties (including myself). If you are interested in learning more, please let me know I'll be happy to refer you to an excellent breeder in your area. My email address is carolf1209@yahoo.com
VERY BEST OF LUCK, you WON'T be disappointed with a Shortie.
