JRT Allergies

Question
QUESTION: Hi Carol!  I am finally getting my first JRT and I do know a lot about them other than things they may be allergic to.  Are there any known allergies to any medications ie: heartworm preventatives?  My mom raises shelties and I know that they cannot have Interceptor.  I just don't want to give her anything that could pose a risk for her.

Thanks for your help!

ANSWER: Hi Phyllis,
Congrats on your new JRT (hope you got her from a breeder and not a store!)
Jacks aren't specifically allergic to any particular medicines etc, but they do tend to have some skin allergies, which most of the time is from wheat, grains, and other foods. Sometimes they are bothered by certain grasses.  There is no way to know until she actually has symptoms. Hopefully she will be allergy free!! Give her all the necessary sprintime/summer meds like heartworm preventative and flea/tick repellant and just keep an eye on her for adverse reactions. To this date I have never heard of jacks allergic to either of these medicines.
You're a responsible owner to care, good luck!
