new JRT puppy

Question
We adopted a puppy from the local animal shelter a week ago.  everyone says she looks like a Jack Russell.  she is thought to be about 10 weeks old.  she is so hyper and bites constantly.  we have had dogs but never a JRT.  this dog is completely different than any dog we have ever been around.  she lunges at you if you are sitting quietly in a chair.  she jumps over the back of the couch.  if i pick her up to move her from something she should not be doing, she may bite my face.  we have only had her a week, but are seriously concerned as we have grandchildren around frequently.  we have lots of time for her. she is outside getting exercised a lot.  we have been consistant in working with her on the "leader of the pack" mentality.  she is extremely smart.  is doing very well with house breaking.  we do crate her at night and whenever we are not around.  HELP.  althought it has only been a week - it has not been a good week.  i have so many puncture wounds in my hands from her biting that i swear i leak when i take a drink of water.  we will hire a professional trainer or do whatever we need to do.

Answer
Hi Susan,
She sounds like she needs some intense and regimented training. Definitely take her to a dog school or hire a trainer and start now.
Look for a private school (not one in store - they are OK for new little puppies but tend to be crowded and distracting.)
The fact that she is young is a good thing, you can get her trained quickly and early at this age. If she is a Jack Russell, she's extremely smart and will be very eager to please you.
You'll see she's the fastest one to learn!!  Best of luck with your new little girl, don't give up yet, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy she will train when in the right environment.
Take care.
