Question
Hi I have an 8 month old Jack russell cross with a toy poodle, Molly is very well behaved and been quick to train, recently though she has been a bit snappy and protective of her toys and chews ( before I could take bones from her mouth without any objection) two week ago I noticed she was bleeding and swollen but no dogs have been bothering her, I kept her on the lead but didn't seem to have any bother with other dogs anyway. Now she isn't bleeding but is still swollen however when I took her out today off leash in the woods I found her being very friendly to other dogs and even standing for them luckily nothing happened and the dogs in question have all been spayed but they where giving her a lot of attention which she was enjoying. I have never had a bitch before and not sure how long a season can last, I don't want to breed her can you give me some info on how long a season lasts and when the next will be  I need to keep her safe and without puppies so need to know what I am looking for. Regards Janette

Answer
Hello, Thanks for your question and I am sorry for the late reply..my home computer is not working right now. But sounds just like a heat cycle the female will ignore any males until the bloody discharge can no longer be seen after it turns a yellish to almost invisable she Will allow males to mount and breed her so watch her for another 3/4 days and you should be in the clear, I suggest spaying companion dogs and its clear you wouldnt want puppies so spaying is the best way to go, Best of luck with Molly.
